SRINAGAR, MAR 14: The ASMITA Pencak Silat State League 2025 (J&K) commenced on Friday at the Indoor Sports Complex, Polo Ground, Srinagar, bringing together nearly 550 women athletes from across Jammu and Kashmir to compete in the traditional martial art.
Organised under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council as part of the ASMITA League initiative of the Sports Authority of India under the Khelo India programme, the event highlights the growing participation of women in sports across the Union Territory.
Officials said the league provides a competitive platform for young athletes across various age and weight categories, allowing them to showcase their talent and gain valuable exposure at the state level.
Over the past few years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a steady rise in the number of women athletes participating in sports at both grassroots and competitive levels. Girls from urban as well as rural areas are increasingly taking up disciplines such as martial arts, athletics, cycling and winter sports, contributing significantly to the region’s medal tally at national events.
Sports Minister Satish Sharma, speaking on the occasion, said the increasing participation of women in sports reflects a changing social mindset.
“It is encouraging to see young girls from across J&K stepping forward and excelling in sports. Our women athletes are proving their strength and resilience even in physically demanding disciplines,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to providing better infrastructure, training and opportunities for women athletes.
Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, said the growing presence of women athletes is strengthening the sports ecosystem in the Union Territory.
“The rising participation of girls and their increasing medal tally at national events reflects the success of sustained sports initiatives. Women athletes from J&K are inspiring the next generation and contributing to building an inclusive sports culture,” he said.
The two-day competition, which concludes on March 15, is expected to witness several exciting bouts as participants from different districts compete for top honours.
Officials said the league reflects the growing momentum of women’s sports in Jammu and Kashmir, with improved infrastructure and training opportunities encouraging more girls to pursue competitive athletics.
