Srinagar, Mar 26 (KNO): The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was closed in Ramban district on Thursday after a landslide and falling boulders blocked the road, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides, officials said.
An official told Kashmir News Observer that large rocks and debris blocked the highway between Karol Bridge and Chanderkot, halting vehicular movement.
Traffic from both Jammu towards Ramban, Banihal and Srinagar, and from the Valley towards Jammu, has been suspended until the road is cleared and declared safe.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, National Highway, Raja Adil Hamid Ganaie said the boulders struck the highway, forcing suspension of traffic.
He added that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has pressed men and machinery into service, and clearance operations are underway.
“The highway will be reopened only after the debris is cleared and the road is declared safe,” he said.
Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the highway due to the blockage. (KNO)
