GULMARG, FEBRUARY 23: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday reiterated the government’s commitment to develop Gulmarg as an international ski destination, saying sustained efforts in infrastructure and planning would boost winter sports and tourism in the region.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 6th Khelo India Winter Games, which was earlier inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Chief Minister said the vision would create opportunities and benefit all sectors linked with sports and tourism.
“Not only is it our intention, but our full effort is to develop Gulmarg as an international ski resort. This will strengthen sports and provide economic security to all those connected with tourism,” he said.
Welcoming athletes and officials from across the country, Omar said he hoped the event would inspire future champions. Referring to Indian skier Arif Khan, he expressed confidence that new talent would emerge from the Winter Games.
“It is a matter of regret that despite our large population, we have not secured a medal in the Asian or Olympic Winter Games. I hope one among you will change that narrative,” he said.
Push for artificial snow systems
Highlighting the challenges posed by climate variability, the Chief Minister stressed the need for artificial snow generation infrastructure to ensure the sustainability of winter sports.
“We cannot rely solely on nature. If we do not create this infrastructure, a time may come when skiing in Gulmarg will become difficult,” he said, urging organisers to schedule future events based on snowfall patterns rather than fixed dates.
Tourism and livelihoods
Omar underscored the economic importance of winter tourism, saying the sector supports thousands of families.
“People associated with tourism—sledge operators, ski guides, instructors and others—depend on snowfall for their livelihood. It is our duty to ensure infrastructure that sustains tourism,” he said.
Encouraging participants, he said, “Winning is not as important as participation. You have come here to compete and represent your states, and we welcome you.”
The event was attended by Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, senior civil and security officials and sports enthusiasts.
