Uri, Jan 26 : A 50-year-old woman who suffered a stroke on Monday morning was carried on shoulders for several kilometres in the Rechawali Nambla area of Uri amid absence of a motorable road delayed access to emergency medical care, locals said.
They told GNS that the woman suffered the stroke at her residence, prompting family members and local residents to transport her on foot to the nearest main road before arranging vehicular transport.
She was initially taken to Sub-District Hospital Uri, where she received preliminary treatment. Owing to the critical nature of her condition, doctors referred her to Government Medical College Baramulla, from where she was later shifted to SMHS Hospital Srinagar for specialised care.
The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by residents of remote areas due to poor road connectivity, especially during medical emergencies, and has renewed demands for urgent improvement of basic infrastructure in the region. (GNS)
