Srinagar, Feb 25 : Gulmarg and Pahalgam received fresh light snowfall while light rains lashed plains in Jammu and Kashmir overnight, officials said on Friday.

A meteorological department official told GNS that Srinagar received 0.4mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours. The summer capital of J&K recorded a rise of 0.9°C in night temperature with mercury settling at 1.6°C against last night’s 0.7°C, he said.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, had 1.2 mm of rainfall and recorded a low of 0.6°C against minus 0.1°C on the previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, also received 1.2mm of rain and had a low of minus 1.5°C against minus 0.8°C on the previous night, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, received 2.2 centimeters of fresh snowfall and recorded a low of minus 1.8°C against minus 0.8 °C last night, he said.

Gulmarg received 6 centimeters of fresh snowfall and recorded a low of minus 5.5°C against minus 5.2°C on the previous night, he said.

The temperature was 0.3°C above normal for this time of the year in the famous resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir had 0.2 cms of rainfall and recorded a low of 2.2°C against 0.2°C on the previous night, the official said.

While ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day long harshest period of winter ended on January 30, and 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ culminated on February 19, Kashmir is presently under the grip of 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

Jammu had 0.2mm of rainfall overnight and recorded a low of 10.4°C against 12.0°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature was 1.2°C below normal for the J&K’s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.

Banihal with 1.22 of rainfall recorded a low of minus 0.2°C, Batote received 9.4mm of rain and recorded a minimum of 0.7°C while Bhaderwah witnessed 14.8mm of rain and recorded a low of minus 0.2°C, the official said.

Ladakh’s Leh had 4 centimeters of fresh snowfall and recorded a low of minus 7.0°C against last night minus 5.6°C on previous night while mercury at automatic station in Kargil settled at minus 13.0°C. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 18.0°C, against 7.2°C on the previous night, official said.

He said scattered light rain, snow or thundershowers was expected over Jammu and Kashmir divisions in the next 24 hours. “Isolated light rain, snow and thundershowers to mainly dry weather” has been forecast for the next two days. (GNS)
