Srinagar, April 21: With an improvement in weather conditions, authorities on Monday expressed hope that one way vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway would resume by tonight.

The vital road link has remained closed due to flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains and cloudbursts in various parts of Ramban district.

The Jammu and Kashmir region witnessed continuous rainfall over the last two days, leading to multiple disruptions along the highway. Ramban, a critical stretch on the highway, bore the brunt of the inclement weather, with several instances of cloudbursts causing flash floods, mudslides, and road blockages.

Due to the disruptions, traffic was halted, leaving over 3,000 vehicles stranded at different points along the highway. Efforts to clear the road had been hampered by ongoing weather challenges.

SSP Ramban, Kulbir Singh said that restoration work had been accelerated following a pause in rainfall. “If weather permits, we expect that stranded vehicles of one side will be allowed to move and proceed to their destinations by tonight,” he said, according to news agency KINS.

The highway, which serves as the only all-weather road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, is often susceptible to disruptions due to the region’s fragile geography.

Authorities have urged travelers to remain patient and stay updated through official advisories. Restoration teams continue to work on clearing debris and ensuring the safe passage of vehicles amid ongoing monitoring of the weather conditions.–(KINS)
