According to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), robotic surgery, a cutting-edge technique, involves the use of robotic devices under the guidance of trained surgeons to conduct intricate procedures within the human body. In a recent development, the administration of GMC Jammu has forwarded a proposal to the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supply Corporation to finalize rate contracts and other necessary formalities for acquiring robotic equipment.

The groundwork for this transition, as per the reports received by KNO, was laid out in the previous budget, with the Union Finance Minister allocating funds for the installation of robotic surgery units in both GMCs. With an earmarked sum of fifty lakh rupees for civil works, the stage is set for the integration of robotic-assisted procedures into the medical landscape of Jammu and Srinagar.

Currently, the surgical departments at GMC Jammu witness a steady flow of 16 to 20 minor and major operations daily, all performed manually by surgeon doctors and their teams. The introduction of robotic surgery promises to revolutionize this landscape, offering improved precision and efficiency in procedures ranging from gastrointestinal surgeries to orthopedic interventions.

“Robotic surgery boasts several advantages over traditional methods, including enhanced dexterity in suturing and reduced trauma to surrounding tissues. Unlike conventional surgery, where placing sutures in deep anatomical regions poses challenges, robotic devices excel in maneuvering through intricate spaces with unparalleled accuracy,” a senior medic from Srinagar, Junaid Javaid told KNO.

Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, expressed optimism regarding the impending introduction of robotic surgery equipment. He emphasized the potential of this technology to elevate patient care standards, ushering in a new era of modern medical interventions.

In parallel efforts, GMC Srinagar is also strategizing to establish a centralized robotic surgery center, facilitating various departments to incorporate robotic-assisted procedures into their repertoire. This comprehensive approach aims to democratize access to cutting-edge medical interventions across specialties—(KNO)
