Srinagar, Mar 1: Iran has announced a 40-day national mourning period following the killing of its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei in joint United States–Israeli air strikes, triggering widespread protests and global reactions.
Iranian state media confirmed that Khamenei was killed in the strikes targeting key leadership and security installations, marking a major escalation in tensions in West Asia. The Iranian leadership termed the attack a “martyrdom” and vowed strong retaliation.
The development has sparked demonstrations in several countries, with protesters condemning the strikes and expressing solidarity with Iran. Large protests were also reported in different parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar, where people took to the streets, carrying placards and black flags while raising slogans.
Hundreds of mourners gathered in parts of the Valley, particularly in Shia-dominated areas, to denounce the killing and observe mourning. Authorities kept a close watch as the protests remained largely peaceful.
The situation in the region remains tense amid fears of further escalation, as Iran and its allies have warned of strong retaliation following the assassination.
