Srinagar, Dec 14 (GNS): Students enrolled in Amar Singh College here complained that filthy toilets at the college have been taking a heavy toll on their health.

The unhygienic condition of toilets comes quite contrary to the goals set under ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’. They alleged the dingy toilets have become a source of infection for the students of the college.

“Thick layer of filth has accumulated on the toilets while polythene and garbage are scattered all over. Stinking toilets are causing inconvenience to us. It is ironic that concerned authorities have failed to ensure proper sanitation of the toilets,” a group of aggrieved students told GNS.

“We restrain ourselves from drinking water during the day just to avoid using the filthy toilets,” they said adding “We have been suffering for over two months now.”

Students said that classrooms are also in filthy condition and not being cleaned up on a regular basis.

Several students complained about absence of heating arrangements in classrooms amid bone-chilling cold weather conditions.

“The temperature remains below sub-zero during winter months in Kashmir and it is mandatory for the education department to make proper heating arrangements for the college, but our institute is functioning without providing us heating facilities, thereby making students suffer a lot,” they said.

Principal Amar Singh College Dr Bashir Ahmad Rather said that toilets may have turned filthy as over hundreds of students appeared in a PSC exam held on Sunday. “I will still get this checked,” he told GNS.

Regarding no heating arrangement in the classroom, he said, “The students may have to suffer this winter as there was less human resource available to arrange coal fed bukhari while from next year, we will be installing the ACs in classrooms,” he said. (GNS)
