Srinagar, Oct 19 : The Kashmir Golf Club (KGC), one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the country, held its elections on Monday after a gap of 14 years.
The election saw enthusiastic participation from members, including a 93-year-old member Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Amin who came to cast his vote.
Speaking on the occasion, as per GNS senior National Conference leader and KGC member Nasir Aslam Wani (Sogami) said KGC holds a special place in the history of golf in the country and the elections after a long time will help revive its past glory.
Sogami said the government has planned a Rs 2 crore project for reconstruction of the Club House and budget has already been earmarked for other upgradation works including fairways, greens and other facilities.
“The club is very accessible, located in the heart of the city. Our mission is to encourage school and college children, both boys and girls, towards golf. We plan to set up a Golf Academy to train children up to competition level,” he said.
He referred to the recent DP World professional golf tournament held in Delhi with a total prize money of 4 million dollars, saying there is huge scope for professional golf.
“Golfers are a strong and close-knit fraternity. Sports brings people and families together. With a proper elected body, administrative concerns will be resolved and the Kashmir Golf Course will be restored to its past glory within a year and a half,” Sogami added.
