Budgam, Apr 9, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian President and founding member of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), Aga Syed Hassan Alsafvi Almosavi, was placed under house arrest on Tuesday night, just ahead of a scheduled emergency meeting of the MMU on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the Anjuman spokesperson, officials from District Police Budgam visited Aga Hassan’s residence and informed that he has been restricted to his home and would not be allowed to step out. The police have not provided an official reason for the action.

The emergency meeting of the MMU, an influential religious alliance comprising various Islamic scholars and clerics in the region, was expected to deliberate on pressing issues concerning the Muslim community, particularly the emerging situation due to Wakf Bill. Following the MMU meet, Aga Hassan was also scheduled to address a Majlis Hussaini at Inderkot in the Sumbal area of Bandipora district.

The Anjuman-E-Sharie Shian has strongly condemned the move, calling it an unjustified interference in religious affairs. “Preventing a senior religious leader from participating in a crucial meeting that concerns matters of faith is deeply condemnable. This act is not only a violation of basic democratic rights but also a direct affront to religious freedom,” the statement said.

The organization also expressed disappointment over what it described as a pattern of restrictions imposed on religious leaders in Kashmir, particularly during significant events. It urged authorities to immediately revoke the house arrest and allow Aga Syed Hassan to fulfill his religious and organizational duties. [KNT]
