Addressing a gathering at Kashmir Haat, LG Sinha, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), emphasized that cultural and heritage values are the very “dhadkan” (heartbeat) of Srinagar. “Sanskriti aur Paramparti Virasat Srinagar ki dhadkan hain,” he remarked, underlining the need to preserve and promote the city’s rich traditions.

The Lieutenant Governor stressed the importance of environmental awareness, urging people to contribute towards safeguarding nature. “Amidst climate change people need to become aware about the importance of environment protection,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure over the past few years, LG Sinha shared his observations of Srinagar’s transformation. “During the past few years, I have had the opportunity to live with the dreams of Srinagar city. I have watched and understood the ‘mizaj’ (temperament) of this place,” he said.

LG Sinha while highlighting the international recognition that Srinagar has received said, “In 2021, Srinagar was designated as a UNESCO Creative City. In 2024, the World Craft Council accorded it the title of a World Craft City. These were big achievements.”

He stated that several initiatives have been taken in recent years to develop Srinagar, with a strong focus on reviving its cultural heritage. “When we started working on improving the quality of life of the people, I was of the firm belief that cultural heritage had to be revived. Srinagar is the center of Bharat’s ancient art. Artists have been an integral part of Srinagar’s culture. Man cannot survive without his culture and heritage.”

Highlighting the balanced approach towards modernization and heritage conservation, LG Sinha said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown the way to turn Kashmir into a paradise.”

“We have taken care of integrating Srinagar’s culture while making it a modern city. It is important to safeguard the culture of any place. Jammu and Kashmir is a land that has always preached humanity,” he added.

He credited various departments for their efforts in reviving cultural activities, including the reintroduction of cinema halls and promotion of art and crafts. “In October 2020, when the Srinagar Smart City project was initiated, we were of the firm belief that there should be open public spaces. The new city has abundant open spaces where people can be seen relaxing and spending quality time,” he said, adding, “In the past few years, Srinagar has been developed into a modern city with all necessary facilities while preserving its cultural essence.”

The modernization of Srinagar Smart City is now being widely discussed across the country, he said. “It shows that our efforts have succeeded to some extent. Srinagar is the best example of a blend of modernization and culture.”

Referring to historical comparisons, LG Sinha mentioned how the British once likened Srinagar to Venice. “Famous British writer Sir Walter Scott had written that Srinagar cannot be compared with any place in the world; it is different from all other places,” he quoted.

LG Sinha also acknowledged the remarkable talent of Srinagar’s youth, who are actively showcasing their skills at Polo View and along the Jhelum banks, adding to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape—(KNO)
