Jammu, Feb 05 : Seeking tough action against the criminals, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma on Wednesday directed police officers to come down heavily and adopt a zero-tolerance policy to destroy gangsters, drug peddlers and criminals’ network.

Chairing a high-level meeting of officers of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, the DIG, according to details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), stressed the need for special efforts to take stern action against gangsters, drug peddlers, thieves, vehicle lifters and other anti-social elements.

During the meeting, held in the backdrop of rising incidents of firing and thefts in Jammu, various intelligence inputs and the modes through which they are receiving the logistic and financial support were shared.

Sharma called for breaking the criminals’ network of financial circles, seizing properties accumulated through illegal trade, including extortion, land grabbing, property dealing, etc.

Addressing the officers, the DIG directed them to maintain the proper lists of all criminals to keep them under proper surveillance.“Support system of these criminals should be kept under surveillance and book them under the law including their relatives and friends who support and provide shelter to them,” he stressed.

The top cop, in view of the recent incidents of theft, firing and robbery in Jammu, urged officers to adopt a mission-oriented approach to eliminate the menace. He called for intensified efforts to identify and dismantle the networks involved in the illicit drug trade.

Sharma underscored the importance of vigilance on suspicious persons to thwart the designs of anti-national elements and maintain a peaceful environment. He directed officers to take legal action against those glorifying gangsters and criminals through social media, television, portals and other media platforms.

The DIG expressed unwavering commitment to justice and urged officers to ensure cases are resolved on their merits.

The meeting also discussed various initiatives, including Operation Cleanup for gangsters, Operation Sanjeevani to fight drug abuse, Operation Pathshala, Operation Kamdhenu, Operation Avtar, Operation Third Eye and Operation Meghdoot. All the officers were directed to strengthen all the nakas in their jurisdictions and identify the locations where the security grid could further be augmented.

Instructions were given to all the officers to keep active surveillance over the activities of Over Ground Workers (OGWs), history sheeters and trouble creators. The top cop called for a massive drive against the vehicles found with tinted glasses, illegal modification using loud music and without the number plate. He called for taking strict legal action against anyone found possessing illegal weapons and land grabbers—(KNO)
