Chila-i-Kalan ends, Chila-i-Khurd makes dry entry in Kashmir

No major activity till Feb 5, light snowfall in higher reaches tomorrow: MeT

Srinagar, Jan 30 : The 40-day harshest winter period, Chila-i-Kalan, has ended in the Valley without any major wet spell, the Chila-i-Khurd, a 20-day milder winter period, has commenced one a dry not with the weatherman predicting no major activity in the next few days, but also stated that light snowfall and rains are expected in the higher reaches intermittently till February 05.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the chilly weather conditions usually being witnessed in the harshest winter period, could not be witnessed amidst the prolonged dry spell in this Chila-i-Kalan as the day temperatures settled to above normal for the majority of the days.

In the last 29 days of the harshest winter period, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a deficit rainfall of 87 per cent as against the normal rainfall of 88.2 mm, the Union Territory has recorded a precipitation of just 11.5 mm only.

As the 20-day milder winter period commenced from today, the weather remained almost dry across Jammu and Kashmir while Director Meteorological department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that there is no forecast of any major weather activity till February 05.

However, he said that there is a possibility of light snow from tomorrow in the higher reaches and also some parts of plains as well. “Another wet spell is expected on February 04,” he said.

Partly to generally cloudy weather is expected from February 06 to February 08, he said.

Meanwhile, the MeT has advised the tourists, travelers and transporters to follow administration and traffic advisory—(KNO)
