Health experts ask elderly, diabetic patients to take extra precautions

Say hip & pelvic fractures cases rise in winters

Srinagar, Dec 19 : The elderly and patients suffering from diabetes need to take extra precautions as hip and pelvic fractures become significantly more common during the winter months.

Noted Orthopedics Dr Younis Kamal told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer KNO that the hip and pelvic fractures are common in winters due to the slippery surfaces, reduced mobility and vitamin c deficiency.

He said that Osteoporosis is a common condition in older adults, particularly women post-menopause, it reduces bone density, making fractures more likely even from minor falls and elderly people and patients suffering from diabetes are more prone to it.

Dr Younis said that common causes of osteoporosis is age as with age the bone density decreases, family history of osteoporosis increases the risk, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and poor nutrition can weaken bones and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, and long-term steroid use can lead to bone loss.

Another orthopaedic doctor said that osteoporosis can lead to fractures, disability and reduced quality of life. He said that osteoporosis can be prevented through proper diet, exercise, quitting smoking, tests and adhering to medications prescribed by doctors.

He said that people must ensure sufficient intake of calcium (1,000-1,200 mg daily) and Vitamin D. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are excellent sources.

Engage in weight-bearing and resistance exercises, such as walking, jogging, or lifting weights, he said.

Doctors said that by adopting a healthy lifestyle and addressing risk factors early, the likelihood of osteoporosis and its associated complications can be significantly reduced—(KNO)
