Srinagar, Dec 11 : The higher reaches of Kashmir including a tourist destination, Sonamarg experienced fresh snowfall on Wednesday while as per the forecast; a few areas of plains would likely receive the season’s first snowfall in the next 24 hours.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), almost four inches of snowfall accumulated at the picturesque Sonamarg area today, bringing down the mercury further across the Valley.

An independent forecaster has predicted rains and snow showers at many places of Kashmir for the next 24 hours.

According to the forecast, light to moderate snowfall is expected at higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpatri, Pahalgam, Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan top, Razdan top, Zojila pass and other upper reaches during the period.

“Light rain is expected at some plains of Kashmir with slight possibility of season’s first light snowfall at a few plains 45% chances during the next 24 hours,” the forecast reads.

The local Meteorological department has however predicted no significant weather activity till December 20th.

In its advisory, the MeT has predicted cold & dry weather over many stations during the next 10 days and appealed the tourists, travelers and transporters to follow administration and traffic advisory.

In the meantime, the minimum temperature improved across Kashmir following the season’s lowest temperature at many places on the previous night.

Against previous night’s minus 5.4 degree Celsius, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has recorded a low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius.

Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, recorded the night temperature of minus 6.0 degree Celsius while in Pahalgam, the mercury settled at minus 1.8 degree Celsius.

Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir, has recorded a low of minus 4.4 degree Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir and Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.5 degree Celsius and 2.0 degree Celsius respectively—(KNO)
