The project will be implemented by the Jal Shakti department in a phased manner, with the first phase starting in the Srinagar district.

Chief Engineer, Jal Shakti Department, Er. Vivek Kohli, told KNO that the proposal to install smart water metres in Kashmir is in the final stage and the implementation process will start this year itself.

He said the commercial establishments in Srinagar would be covered first, followed by other categories.

“We have already done the groundwork for the prestigious project and prepared a proposal. We are hopeful to get funds for the implementation process,” he said.

Kohli said it would take time to introduce the water metres, but the beginning has been made.

The chief engineer stated that they would soon decide on the duration and mode of payment for the billing process.

“It can be monthly or quarterly, depending upon the feasibility and other factors. However, the final would be taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Water Regulatory Authority,” he said.
