Sonamarg hosts first-ever National Snowshoe Championship

Ganderbal, Feb 18: The picturesque Sonamarg is making history by hosting its first-ever national-level event in winter sports, the 8th National Snowshoe Championship-2024.

This event marks a significant milestone for the mountain resort, as previous editions of the championship were traditionally held at the renowned Ski-resort Gulmarg.

The 8th edition of the championship is being organized by the J&K SnowShoe Federation in collaboration with the Sonamarg Development Authority and key stakeholders viz. the Hoteliers Association of Sonamarg.

The event was inaugurated by Shyambir, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal, in the presence of Farooq Ahmad Baba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sonamarg Development Authority and General Secretary Snow Shoe Association J&K, Dr. Altaf-ur-Rehman.

Over 200 athletes representing 13 states across India are participating in various events throughout the three-day championship. This gathering of athletes from different regions further emphasizes the national significance of the championship and underscores its role in promoting winter sports in Sonamarg.
The DC expressed his delight at the hosting of the championship in Sonamarg, highlighting its potential to catalyze development and enhance the health resort’s prospects for a brighter future. He further said that the district administration is committed to providing all necessary facilities to enhance the experience of tourists visiting Sonamarg during the winter months.

CEO Sonamarg Development Authority extended his gratitude towards the Hoteliers Association of Sonamarg for making this event possible by providing boarding and lodging facilities for both visiting athletes and other tourists.

He further urged tourists from other states and our Union Territory to consider visiting Sonamarg during winter, emphasizing the unparalleled and picturesque experience it offers.

As the competition progresses against the backdrop of Sonmarg’s snow-covered terrain, spectators are treated to a spectacle of skill and athleticism. With its stunning scenery and the thrill of competition, the National Snowshoe Championship in Sonamarg truly embodies the essence of winter sports, making it a dream come true for enthusiasts and participants alike.
