Srinagar, Oct 16 : Rains lashed plains while upper reaches received snowfall, leading to the considerable drop in temperature in Jammu and Kashmir.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a maximum of 12.0°C which was 9.7°C below normal for the summer capital which received 9.8mm of rain from 0830 hours to 1730 hours. It was still raining in Srinagar when this report was filed.

There are reports of light snowfall from Gulmarg, Peer ki Gali, Simthan Pass, Gurez, Tulail, Sonamarg, the Zojila axis on the Srinagar-Leh Highway besides the Upper reaches.

The MeT official said that Jammu city received 56.8mm of rainfall during the day and it recorded a maximum of 20.9°C which was 10.4°C below normal.

The weather department has predicted light rain and snowfall (over higher reaches) at scattered places during next 244 hours.

“Overall improvement is expected in Jammu and Kashmir after October 18,” he said, adding, “There will be significant drop in temperature across J&K,” he said.

The MeT department has urged farmers to postpone harvesting of crops till October 17. It also warned that the weather system may bring temporary disruptions in transportation especially at vulnerable places like Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthantop, Sadnatop etc.(GNS)
