Srinagar, Jul 13 : Peoples Democratic Chairperson Mehbooba Mufti has alleged that several youth associated with the party were arrested for taking out a candlelight vigil here on Thursday evening on eve of ‘Martyrs Day’.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter Mehbooba Mufti wrote; “PDP youth members have been arrested & taken to Kothi bagh for taking out a candlelight vigil to pay tributes to the 13th July martyrs. Mother of democracy anyone? (sic.)”.
When contacted, SSP Srinagar Rakesh Balwal refuted the allegations, maintaining that a group of youth was taken into preventive detention only for an hour or so, “There wasn’t any case registered and no arrests were made at all”, the police officer said adding “ Preventive detentions for short duration is a routine in case of protests in press enclave & also in other parts of srinagar, so as to avoid any law and order situation.” (GNS)
