Srinagar May 17: The Department of Youth Services and Sports J&K organized a mega Road Race under the age groups of U/14, U/17, and U/19 years for school boys here.

Regional Transport Officer Kashmir (RTO) Shahnawaz Bukhari flagged off a large contingent of energetic young boys from different Government and private educational institutions of district Srinagar. He was accompanied by Waseem Raja Joint Director Kashmir of the Department of Youth Services and Sports and Nasir Mehmood Khan Assistant Commissioner Nazool Srinagar.

This exciting event was held in connection with the G20 summit. Starting from Indoor Stadium Srinagar, the race culminated at Government High School Rawalpora. A remarkable display of sportsmanship and enthusiasm was witnessed as more than 1100 student-athletes from different Government and private schools of all the eight sports zones of Srinagar actively participated in the road race.

The road race, held under the auspices of the G20 summit, highlighted the importance of sports in nurturing the physical and mental well-being of the youth. It showcased the dedication and talent of young athletes from various parts of UT’s summer capital, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among the participants.

While speaking to young athletes, RTO said that such road races help us in staying fit and free from different lifestyle diseases. He added that physical activity is a vital component of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. “Running is one of the simplest activities children can take up to become fitter and more active – mentally, physically and emotionally,” Bukhari added.

JD YS&S Kashmir expressed his satisfaction and happiness over the overwhelming response from a huge number of youngsters towards such an initiative. “We are thrilled to witness the passion and determination displayed by the young athletes today. The Annual Road Race not only promotes physical fitness but also encourages teamwork, discipline, and a spirit of healthy competition among the youth. We are proud to be a part of the G20 summit, providing a platform for our talented athletes to shine,” JD stated.

The Annual Road Race concluded with a grand ceremony at Government High School Rawalpora, where the winners were honored and recognized for their exceptional performances. The event’s success served as a testament to the dedication and hard work put in by the participants, teachers, and officials, further reinforcing the Department of Youth Services and Sports’ commitment to promoting sports excellence in Srinagar.

Continuing its activities as per the already issued calendar issued in connection with the scheduled G-20 meeting, YS&S organized various events for different age group categories including some co-curricular activities in different sports zones of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Sports Zone Mattan hosted One Day Trekking Camp for students and also invited International Washu Player Tanzeel Ahmad Shah as a special Guest of Honour to interact with students for motivating them to take part in sports activities while a running event was organized from Bumzoo to Sports Stadium Mattan. In another event, Zone Shangus organized Zonal Level Badminton & Rope Skipping for the Age Group of U/14 for both Boys & Girls at HSS Sahngus. Zone Verinag organized rescheduled Senior Citizen’s sports events which were previously postponed. Sports Zone Anantnag organized a Trekking Camp which was flagged off by Principal HSS Kadipora and the trekking route was up to High Ground Hill Top in which 50 Students participated from different institutions.

Pertinently the whole day was spent very actively by young boys and girls as about 650 student players participated in various activities in the district.
