Sopore, Jan 09 : Bashir Ahmed War, the man who introduced Kiwi fruit cultivation in Kashmir died after a brief illness at his home in Warpura village of Sopore late Sunday evening. He was 65.
As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), WAr was suffering from pneumonia and on Sunday evening struggled with breathing and shifted to SDH Sopore and passed on the way to hospital, his family said.
War was laid to rest this morning at his ancestral graveyard at Warpura Sopora.
Known for his jovial nature, he did LLB from Aligarh Muslim University. He was a member of Kashmir’s horticulture board and would travel to different countries.
Several social-political organisations including Fruit growers and dealers association, Traders Federation Sopore, former legislator Abdul Rashid Dar and others expressed grief over the demise of War.
He was known as ‘Kiwi man’ after he introduced the fruit by setting up his own kiwi orchard in Sopore known as apple town—(KNO)
