Srinagar, May 26 : Nine persons were killed in a tragic road accident near Chini Nallah along Zojila road last night, official sources said.

They told GNS that a Tavera bearing registration number JK12-7466 heading towards Srinagar from Kargil fell down into the nallah, after the driver purportedly lost control over the vehicle. On receiving information, police launched a rescue operation at the site and retrieved bodies of seven persons shortly after and the bodies of two other persons were retrieved on Wednesday morning, they said adding one person was rescued in injured condition and is under treatment at SKIMS Soura.

The deceased persons have been identified as Azhar Iqbal son of Liyakat Hussain (driver) resident of Poonch, Ankit Dileep son of Dileep Kumar resident of Surat, Gujarat, Gandhi Marmu his father Mangal Marmu son of Qadam Marmu residents of Jharkhand, Ranjit Kumar son of Rohit Kumar, resident of Phathankot Punjab, Muhammad Aslam Parray son of Abdul Rashid Parray resident of Kulgam, Nanak Chand (Naib Subedar) son of Bhagvan Chand resident of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Dileshwar Sidhar son of Gorakhnath, resident of Sidar Chattisgarh and Sunil Lal.

Confirming the incident a police official told GNS that soon after intimation they launched a rescue operation at the site. “We were able to retrieve seven persons initially and upon persistent efforts later on retrieved the other two bodies also”, the official said. (GNS)
