Relief From Hot Weather: Rains Lashes J&K, More Forecast Till May 24

Jammu, May 20 : Most parts of Jammu and Kashmir received rain while the weatherman on Friday forecast more “intermittent” showers and thunderstorm till May 24.

“Today rain/thunderstorm is expected at many places of Kashmir and at scattered places of Jammu, especially hilly areas,” an official of the meteorological department here told GNS. “Same weather is likely to prevail for the next few days. Intermittent rain and thunderstorm is likely at many places of J&K during May 21-24th,” he said, adding, “Temporary respite from hot weather especially in plains of Jammu during the above period.”

In last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar received 0.1 mm of rain, Qazigund 10.2 mm, Pahalgam 0.2 mm, Kupwara 5.2 mm, Kokernag 12.6 mm, Gulmarg 0.2 mm, Banihal 11.4 mm, Batore 1.0 mm and Bhadarwah 3.6mm.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 13.2°C against 13.4°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, above normal by 1.8°C during this time of the year for the summer capital.

Qazigund recorded a low of 10.3°C against 9.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.1°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a minimum of 8.0°C against 6.6°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.1°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir during this time of the season, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 10.3°C against 10.9°C on the previous night. It was 0.3°C above normal during this time of the season for the place in south Kashmir, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 6.4°C against 7.4°C on the previous night, the official said. While 6.8°C is normal for the world famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 0.4°C ‘below’ normal for the place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of 12.8°C against 9.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.7°C above normal for the district, the official told Global News Service.

Jammu recorded a low of 28.6°C against 26.2°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature 4.5°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 11.6°C, Batote 15.4°C and Bhadarwah 12.7°C, the official added. (GNS)
