Srinagar, April 22 : Amid rains in plains and snowfall over higher reaches, night temperature dropped below normal in Jammu and Kashmir barring Kupwara on Friday, officials said.

The meteorological department has forecast cloudy weather at most places of J&K with intermittent light rain or snowfall over higher reaches.

An official of the department here said that widespread light to moderate rain, thunderstorm and hailstorm occurred at some places and snowfall over higher reaches during the last two days in J&K. “Weather (is) most likely to remain cloudy at most places of J&K with intermittent light rain/snowfall over higher reaches,” he said, adding, “Expect, gradual improvement from this evening.”

Overall, he said, there’s no forecast of any major rain during next week but “a brief spell of occasional light rain with thunderstorm can’t be ruled out at some places.”

Meanwhile, the official told GNS that Srinagar, having received 10.3 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours, recorded a low of 8.6°C against 10.0°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, was 0.3°C ‘below’ normal during this time of the year for the summer capital.

Qazigund received 23.2 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 5.2°C against 8.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was below normal by 2.3°C for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, had 16.2 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 4.1°C against 8.0°C on the previous night. It was 3.5°C below normal during this time of the season for the place, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, had 18.6mm of rain in the 24 hours and recorded a minimum of 2.0°C against 8.6°C last night. The temperature was 2.0°C below normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg received 15.4mm of rain and recorded a low of 0.0°C against 2.0°C on the previous night, the official said. While 3.3°C is normal for the world famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 3.3°C below normal for the place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir received 2.2 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 8.1°C against 8.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.5°C above normal for the district, the official told Global News Service.

Jammu also received light rainfall of 1.2mm during the time and recorded a low of 18.1°C against 25.0°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature was 2.9°C ‘below’ normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal had 8.4mm of rain and recorded a low of 7.0°C while mercury settled in Batote at 8.9°C after 8.6mm of rain. Bhaderwah received 13.6 mm of rain and recorded a minimum of 7.3°C, the official said. (GNS)
